This material is called smart foam because it has unique characteristics: When impacted in a slow, softer manner, the foam maintains a soft feel that will cushion a blow, but when impacted quickly with a lot of force, the D3O foam tenses up, creating a firm but protective layer that will soften any impact and recoil.
